| An Overview of LASIK |
Scientific acknowledgement
In 1999, LASIK became recognised by the German Ophthalmologic
Society (DOG) and by the Professional Federation of German
Ophthalmologists as a method of correcting short-sightedness
up to –10.00D and astigmatism up to –3.00D,
with the following declaration;
„
A procedure becomes scientifically acknowledged once long term
results are available, late complications seem unlikely, advantages
and disadvantages are known, and the field of application can
be defined.“
Weighing up the costs
The costs are formulated
according to the official fee structure for physicians
in Germany (GOÄ).
The chamber of physicians in Germany has placed all refractive
surgery procedures (including LASIK) in the catalogue of
privately financed health services. This means that public
health insurance is officially not allowed to cover the cost.
Public health insurance can’t even cover cases where
a refractive surgical procedure is deemed to be medically
necessary! Private health insurance companies decide on an
individual basis. The Receiver of Inland Revenue in Germany
can allow the cost to be tax deductible.
How to plan your time
Preparation for the LASIK involves an extensive preliminary
examination. This takes 1-2 hours and consists of a consultation
with the eye specialist as well as a series of measurements
which are necessary in order to maximize the accuracy of
your treatment. Your pupils will be dilated to examine
your retina, and you will not able to drive after this
examination. On the day of treatment we recommend someone
accompanies you. A couple of days off work after the procedure
also reduces the stress on your eyes during the important
recovery period. The general check-up routine starts the
day after treatment with follow-ups generally scheduled
for one week and 1 months and 3 months after treatment.
Bilateral surgery
The vast majority of our patients have both eyes treated
on the same day. This way you are efficiently through the
treatment process sparing you the inconvenience of living
with one eye treated and one eye untreated, and having
to go through 2 separated healing phases. In addition to
this, the laser is also calibrated identically for the
treatment of both eyes. It is also now well documented
by several long term studies that there is no significantly
increased risk in having both eyes treated on the same
day.
Customised LASIK
EuroEyes offer you treatment with the latest in customised
Wave-front LASIK technology. We use an aberrometer (Wave-front
Analyser) to evaluate the higher order aberrations of your
visual system. These are optical errors not correctable
by glasses or contact lenses, which can be responsible
for night vision glare related disturbances. This customised
Wave-front LASIK treatment can treat these higher order
aberrations, in doing so reducing these symptoms and improving
your night vision.
