The History of EuroEyes
The EuroEyes Clinical Group is an organisation of Government Licenced Eye Clinics, which specialise in ocular refractive surgery for the correction of Shortsightedness(Myopia), Longsightedness(Hyperopia) and Astigmatism. With centres in Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover, Leipzig, Oberhausen, Stuttgart (and Kopenhagen), EuroEyes is the largest independant group of Specialist Refractive Surgery Clinics in Germany. It´s Eye Specialists have significant experience in both Laser Refractive and Intraocular Refractive Surgery techniques. To date, over 35 000 LASIK procedures and more than 60 000 Intraocular procedures have been carried out; the latter including the implantation of Intraocular Contact Lenses (ICL) as well as Cataract operations.

Today the main procedure we carry out at EuroEyes is LASIK (for shortsighted patients up to -10.00 dioptres, longsighted patients up to +5.00 dioptres, and for astigmatic patients up to around 5,00 dioptres) Our Eye Specialists also specialise and have extensive experience in further procedures for patients who lie outside these limits; including the implantation of the aforementioned Intraocular Contact Lenses, as well as Clear Intraocular Lens exchanges (replacement of the clear intraocular lens by a corrective artificial implanted lens) In addition to this EuroEyes have carried out over 60 000 additional Intraocular surgical procedures, including routine Glaucoma and Cataract surgery.

The inaugeral EuroEyes clinic was opened in 1993 in Hamburg under the leadership of Dr. med. Jørn S. Jørgensen (www.lasik-hamburg.de) being the first clinic in Germany to carry out Refractive Surgery using the LASIK technique. Participating in this inaugeral clinic was Dr. Albert Newman from the Newman Eye Institute in the United States (At this time the president of the Outpatient Surgery Society), establishing Dr. Albert Newman and Dr. Jørn S. Jørgensen as being amoung the pioneering surgeons of the LASIK Refractive Surgery procedure in Germany. In the years following this, EuroEyes in Hamburg has held numerous Refractive Surgery Conferences, with national and international participants.

EuroEyes is represented in Hamburg by two state-of-the-art Eye Laser Centres. In addition to Laser Refractive Surgery, over 60 000 Intraocular surgical procedures have been carried out in the AugenLaserZentrum Elbchaussee 454 over the years. In 1998, a second AugenLaserZentrum was opened in DomStrasse 19, which started out as a sister practice of AugenLaserZentrum Munich, and has to date carried out more than 15 000 LASIK operations. EuroEyes was the first refractive surgery clinic in Hamburg to introduce, under the supervision of Dr. med. Jørn S. Jørgensen, the Femtosecond Laser (Intralase). With this laser it is now possible to carry out the complete LASIK procedure without the introduction of any mechanical operation devices.

1997 saw the opening of AugenLaserZentrum Kopenhagen in the Hamlet Private Hospital (www.lasik.dk), with "LASIK - The way to go", the first Refractive Surgery Congress to be held in Kopenhagen. The Eye Specialists in the EuroEyes Clinic Group have developed this clinic into one of the leading centres for Refractive Surgery in Danemark. Heading the clinic is Dr. Jannik Boberg-Ans, who in addition to carrying out regular Refractive Surgery, also has significant experience in Intraocular Lens Surgery. In early 2005, the Femtosecond Laser was also introduced into this clinic, under the expertise of Dr. Jannik Boberg-Ans.

EuroEyes AugenLaserZentrum Berlin (www.lasik-berlin.de), was opened in 2000 in the Sony-Center on Potsdamer Platz under the leadership of Frau Dr. med. Inken Lamcke who had become Ophthalmologist after completing her training in the Schlosspark-Klinik in Berlin. She then underwent training to specialise in Refraktive Surgery in the AugenLaserZentrum Berlin, which was also one of the first clinics to specialise in Wavefront-guided LASIK Refractive Surgery. Frau Dr. med. Manuela Keuch has headed this clinic since 2004, and the Femtosecond Laser was also implemented into this clinic in 2005.

AugenLaserZentrum Leipzig (www.lasik-leipzig.de) was opened in 2001. In doing so, one of the most modern Eye Clinics in the former East Germany was established, under the close co-operation of Eye Surgeon Dr. med. Omid Kermani (AugenLaserZentrum Köln) and the Eye Specialists of EuroEyes. This clinic has since then been under the successful leadership of Dr. med. K. Nordwald, and was then incorporated fully into the EuroEyes group in early 2003. It was at this time equiped with the Wavefront Guided LASIK setup.

The EuroEyes AugenLaserZentrum Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig are members of VSDAR (Verband der Spezialkliniken Deutschlands für Augenlaser und Refraktive Chirurgie e.V.) This organisation was founded to carry out Quality Management, and to encourage the exchange of information between leading experts in Refractive Surgery in Germany and Europe.

AugenLaserZentrum Rhein-Ruhr (www.lasik-centro.de) was opened in December 2002, in the "Neuen Mitte" of Oberhausen under the leadership of Dr. med. Jørn Jørgensen. This Clinic incorporated the EuroEyes philosophy, including the concepts of Quality Assurance, Quality Management and Hygiene Management. In order to ensure the smooth implementation of these high standards of quality management, the entire personal, including the Eye Specialists, received their training in the EuroEyes Hamburg and Berlin Clinics. This insures the optimal standards of care for all our patients.

EuroEyes AugenLaserZentrum in Königstrasse 70 in Stuttgart (www.euroeyes-stuttgart.de) was opened in July 2003 under the leadership of Dr. med. Wolf Eckhard Weingaertner and Dr. med. Jørn Jørgensen. This clinic was equiped with the latest in technology and also upheld the EuroEyes implemented standards of Quality Managenment, Equipment Certification and the training of personal, the latter being undertaken in the Hamburg and Berlin clinics.

EuroEyes AugenLaserZentrum Stuttgart then concentrated on providing the latest WaveFront-assisted LASIK treatments, and in late 2004 was also the first clinic in Baden-Würtenburg to implement the new Femtosecond Laser (Intralase). Intraocular surgery, such as the implantation of Intraocular Lenses (ICL) and Glaucoma Surgery is also undertaken here.

EuroEyes AugenLaserZentrum in Hannover, Georgstrasse 34 (www.euroeyes-hannover.de) was opened in February 2004 opposite the Opera House in the heart of Hanover. Leading this clinic is Dr. med. Robert Löblich. This is a state of the art clinic specialising in Refractive Surgery, and upholds the high standards of Quality Assurance and Quality Management implemented across the EuroEyes Clinical Group. The Laser Surgeons here belong to the group of laser surgery pioneers, possessing significant surgical experience in the LASIK, LASEK and PRK procedures, having performed more than 35 000 of these operations.

A working synergy has become established between the EuroEyes clinics in Germany, reinforced by close co-operation between these clinics, whereby we can now look back at more than 35 000 laser refractive corrections that have been carried out by our group. Many of our centres are DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 certified, whereby the procedures such as hygiene control and patient management pre- and post-operatively are precisely documented and analysed. This ensures an optimal treatment assurance for every patient. In addition to this, the accumulated results by each clinic are analysed and compared. In doing so it is possible at EuroEyes to optimise post-operative results and maintain complication rates at a very low level in surgical procedures carried out by our so-called "high volume surgeons". In addition to this, we at EuroEyes invest in the best and latest laser technology, maintaining our position amoungst the frontrunners in laser technology. This can be demonstrated in the EuroEyes Group being the first Refractive Surgery Clinicgroup in Germany to successfully implement the Femtosecond Laser (Intralase). EuroEyes have also implemented a computer platform where the goal is to enable an up to date accumulation and analysis of the refractive surgery results of each individual clinic.
